“Jawaani Jaaneman” Review: It Could Have Been Funnier & Better

Jawaani Jaaneman stars Saif Ali Khan, Tabu and debutante Alaya Furniturewala in lead roles. The film has been directed by Nitin Kakkar.

Jawaani Jaaneman has been in news ever since its official announcement was made, and there were various reasons for it to keep hitting headlines every now and then. First, it reunites seasoned actors Saif Ali Khan and Tabu after a long gap of two decades. The duo last worked together on Sooraj Barjatya’s family entertainer Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999). They were not romantically paired opposite each other though. Secondly, the movie marks the silver screen debut of Alaya Furniturewala, the daughter of former model and actress Pooja Bedi. Jawaani Jaaneman entered theatres on 31st January and here is what our reviewer has to say about it.

Jawaani-Jaaneman
Jawaani Jaaneman stars Saif Ali Khan, Alaya & Tabu

Story: Jawaani Jaaneman revolves around a 40 plus single man Jazz (Saif Ali Khan) who is basically a playboy. His entire world revolves around parties, hook-ups and unbridled fun. He does not want to accept his age and the fact that with age come certain responsibilities one cannot shirk. However, things change drastically when a 21-year-old girl named Tia (Alaya Furniturewala) enters his life, claiming that she could be his daughter, out of wedlock, obviously. Then enters the scene his ex-girlfriend Ananya (Tabu) who could be Tia’s mother. Will this sudden revelation change his outlook towards life? Is Tia really his daughter? To know this and much more, watch the film in cinemas near you.

Saif Ali Khan is also the co-producer of the film

Critical Analysis: Jawaani Jaaneman is a perfectly cast film, with Saif Ali Khan impressing with his strong acting chops again. 2020 is turning out to be a great year for the actor, it seems. Just a couple of weeks ago, he surprised fans with a negative character in Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and now with Jawaani Jaaneman, he wins many hearts with his endearing act. Urban characters suit Saif Ali Khan as he gets into the skin of such characters very easily.

Alaya Furniturewala looks confident in her debut performance. She can also do wonders in urban characters. It will be interesting to see what types of roles she picks up hereon. Tabu, like always, is bang on! One should learn from her how to steal thunders from other actors with limited screen time.

The only problem with the film is that it is predictable. The first half is fun and breezy, but as the film enters the second half, the pace dips and things remain bland for a long, long time. Strong writing could have made Jawaani Jaaneman a funnier and better film. It still makes for an entertaining watch.

Final Verdict: Jawaani Jaaneman has moments of fun and genuine laughter, but very sporadic. Having said that, there are plenty of other things which might attract you. For example, its non-judgemental approach towards men who do not want to settle down. Overall, the film entertains you – more with its emotional quotient than humour. I am going with 3 stars.
