Hitting a massive $330 million worldwide on Sunday, the blockbuster supernatural horror movie The Nun became the top-grossing film in September.

According to the Deadline, at the international box office, the fifth project of the hit horror series The Conjuring Universe has grossed $221 million. Meanwhile, it has pulled in $109 million in the US market. In addition, the film of Warner Bros. has dominated the number one position at the international market for four consecutive weeks, said Variety.

With the cunning and scary but extremely successful appearance in The Conjuring 2, the producers decided to bring Valak’s awful image back to the widescreen. They invested in one separate spin-off to deeply explore the terrible origin of this evil demon in The Nun.

... but also beat the previous record earnings of The Conjuring 2 in 2016

This return marks the third appearance of the mighty Devil named Valak. In addition to her debut at The Conjuring 2 (2016), she also plays the cameo role in Annabelle: Creation (2017). Valak’s return in this latest installment sets a new record of the highest-grossing film in The Conjuring Universe series. It breaks the previous record sales of $320 million established by the film The Conjuring 2 in 2016.

The Nun
Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) confronts the demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons)

The story begins in 1952. Father Burke and Sister Irene are sent to a cloistered abbey in Romania by the Vatican to investigate the suicide of a young nun.

Here, together they discover the frightening demonic force raging behind mysterious deaths. It conspires to destroy the peace of the holy place. The murky abbey becomes the place where happens the scary battle between Christian believers and the evil under the cover of a nun. Confronting the demon Valak, people representing the light and the good are gravely threatened with not only their survival but their beliefs and their minds.

The producer position is a combination of the talented director James Wan, and Peter Safran.

The film features the male movie star Demian Bichir as Father Burke. Plus the young actress Taissa Farmiga, a new Hollywood “scream queen” regularly appearing in recent horror films, plays Sister Irene. Especially, the actress Bonnie Aarons reappears as the demon Valak after her impressive performance in The Conjuring 2.

In addition, the supporting cast also includes actor Jonas Bloquet as a local villager Frenchie, Charlotte Hope as Sister Victoria, and Ingrid Bisu as Sister Oana.
