Deepika Padukone, who was last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Padmaavat”, returns to grace the silver screen with “Chhapaak”, a real-life inspired film on an acid attack survivor.

Deepika Padukone is currently busy promoting her much-awaited film Chhapaak which marks her return to the big screen after a gap of two years. The talented actress was last seen in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Padmaavat in January, 2018. Her next release Chhapaak is inspired from a real-life story on an acid attack survivor named Laxmi Agarwal.

The trailer of Chhapaak has received overwhelming response and Deepika Padukone is hopeful that the film helps bring about lasting change in how society perceives acid attack survivors. The actress wishes her film to be so impactful that there would not be need for making more films portraying the plight of acid attack survivors.

Talking to a newswire, Deepika Padukone said that the idea behind making Chhapaak is to invoke empathy and understanding rather than paint women who have undergone the ordeal as victims. She said that beyond the gruesomeness, the violence and all of that, Chhapaak is a story of the human spirit and hope and that is why she decided to tell the story.

The actress also said it was a story that spoke to her and she felt pride in attaching herself to the project. She hoped that the makers do not have to constantly tell stories on acid attack survivors for everyone to see change. She wished that with her film, we as a society begin to see that change for ourselves and for acid attack survivors. She said that if we don't see anything changing then we have done something wrong as a society.

Chhapaak is helmed by Meghna Gulzar whose last offering Raazi (2018) turned out to be one of the most successful women-centric films of all times. Apart from Deepika Padukone, immensely talented Vikrant Massey will also be seen essaying an important character in the film. Chhapaak, produced by Deepika Padukone and Fox Star Studios, is scheduled to release on 10th January, 2020.
